My Experience as a Bold Betty
By Kirsten Freeh
Today is international women’s day and I feel on fire with hope and strength because of a small start up company I found at just the right time. After three years in a new city I was losing hope of ever finding a community like the one I had back home. I used to run trail marathons, rock climb and camp EVERY WEEKEND. I was often teased for showing up to the gear shop I worked at with leaves still in my hair.
When I moved to Colorado I had envisioned this same thing on a much grander scale but meeting friends as an adult was more difficult than I had ever imagined (I am 26). I am currently working from home and would try and force myself to chat with people at the gym or join various groups, nothing felt authentic, until the betties.
I have become an addict. About eight months ago I went to my first bold betties meet up after finding them online and met Jessie, our chapter lead. Jessie was at the trailhead with her fur baby Albert and instantly greeted me and my two hounds with a smile and dog treats at the ready. We had about six gals show up – every single one of us new to the group – and left as really good friends. After that hike I took a two month break from the group getting married but as soon as I got back I knew I wanted to dive in! Within a week Jessie, Kristen (our alpha betty) and Sommer (the COO) got me ready step up as an alpha and event organizer on meetup.com
I have been planning one to three events a week for about a month – like I said I am totally addicted. I have met the most wonderful, real, electric females in just my short time with the betties. I fully believe in the message and the methods these gals are spreading. I would urge ANYONE reading this blog who may have just seen our plethora of hashtags and photos across social media to give it a try because I genuinely feel like we are on to something big.
Females do not have to be catty and intimidating, we are nurturing creatures that biologically need a tribe. This company offers that to those of us who may be shy, new to a city or just tired of the boys having all the fun! I remember always complaining about having all guy friends when it came to the outdoors… and now all I have to do is let my girls know what I am doing and someone will be down! We do mixers and educational events for those who are new to the back country experience, we have full fledged trips to other countries, guided trips to try ice climbing or canyoneering… and so much more. There is a place and an event perfect for you in our tribe – and if you are having trouble or feeling shy just contact your local chapter. Trust me, I love it so much I can’t stop hashtagging and inviting everyone in my life from my boss in her 60s to my baby sister who is a freshman in college.
Thank you Nikki (CEO), Arezou (CMO), and Sommer (COO) for leading this tribe of women I am so proud to be a part of. The human experience truly does lie just beyond our comfort zones and you ladies are making it so much fun to step beyond the day to day.
