Women Adventurers | Trip To Machu Picchu | What You Need To Know
The hidden Inca city of Machu Picchu is one for the bucket list. Mach Picchu is held as one of the most majestic places on earth. Located in Peru, the fortress was never revealed to the Spaniards during the inquisition and was forgotten until the earlier part of the twentieth century. Luckily for us women adventurers, the Inca citadel was designated in 1983 and can now accompany the likes of anyone willing to take the trek.
Bold Betties is willing to take the trek and is calling all women adventurers to join!
Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about the hike to Machu Picchu:
What is the physical rating of the Machu Picchu hike?
The hike to Machu Picchu is demanding. It is high altitude; 7,972ft to be exact and can be strenuous at times. Though it is accessible to most healthy hikers.
- What will the weather be like in May?
May through September is the perfect time to visit Machu Picchu. Although it’s a couple months out of the rainy season, Bold Betties highly recommends you bring rain gear. The temperature remains in the high 60’s to low 70’s, a moderate temperature for hiking. In the evenings, the temperature drops and can get as low as high 30’s, so be sure to bring a good amount of thermals. As well, make sure to pack a thorough three-season sleeping bag.
- Are there bathrooms along the hike?
There are a few locations along the way with permanent (very rustic) bathroom facilities, though more than likely you’ll be out on the trail bathroom-less. No need to worry! If you’re a part of the Bold Betties adventure, your crew that accompanies you will set up portable bathrooms when needed.
- How much weight can I pack?
Bold Betties is accompanied by G Adventures on the trek to Machu Picchu. G Adventures are support guides that run their own treks. This ensures fair treatment of their porters and quality equipment. Their porters will be handling the majority of the baggage, leaving you to carry a small daypack, water, rain gear, camera, and snacks.
Your actual backpack should weigh up to 13 pounds at the most. If you wish to bring extra clothing for the couple days of nightlife in Peru, feel free. You can leave it in storage at the hotel and retrieve it on your way back. Though please note, make sure to bring along a travel size first aid kit.
- Should I bring trekking poles?
Bold Betties highly recommends trekking poles. For those struggling with the altitude, the poles will help on the ascent. Whether you have bad knees or hips, the poles will help on the descent. Though please note, metal tipped trekking poles are not allowed on the trail.
- What type of food options will there be with Bold Betties and G Adventures?
Upon signing up for the Machu Picchu adventure with Bold Betties, G Adventures will ask in advance of any food allergies or restrictions. In addition, the food that will be served is usually very hearty and always made from local produce, such as quinoa soup.
Machu Picchu is one of planet earth’s most mysterious and beautiful world heritage sites. Built over 500 years ago without the assistance of iron, wheels, or steel, the Inca Empire created this impressive fortress that continues to leave patrons puzzled. Somehow the Incas created complex measurements and calculations without the use of any written language. It's an awe-inspiring site worth seeing with an incredible history worth knowing.
BOLD BETTIES takes the intimidation out of adventure by connecting women adventurers to Each Other, the Outdoors and ultimately their Fabulous Selves!
