Kurtz Ranch Guided Canoe Trip St. Vrain
Prepare yourself for a wilderness canoeing experience amidst the farms and ranches of Boulder & Weld counties–East of Longmont. Wilderness mingles with rural rangelands on this section to show you an interesting cross-section of Colorado’s high prairie, where domestic cattle roam alongside mule deer and you can glimpse the Old West in abandoned railroad bridges. Meet the nearby family of bald eagles, and see if you can spot their colossal nest! Further downriver, a sprawling Heron Rookery hangs in a Cottonwood grove and when active the lanky birds appear prehistoric as they dwell among the treetops. An elusive Mink might slink along the banks or through the water, and when you stop at a sandbar for a snack, you might see its star-shaped tracks along the water’s edge. There are ample spots to stop on this section and swim, and the stones are perfect for skipping!
Common Wildlife Seen
- Great Horned Owls
- American White Pelican
- Snapping Turtles
- Many songbirds, e.g. Western Tanagers
- Cliff and Bank Swallows
For All Guided Canoe Trips:
No canoeing experience is necessary and we will provide basic instruction and orientation at the beginning of every trip, including learning river safety, paddle strokes, and how to read the river and work with the current. All of your river gear (boat, life jacket & paddle) will be provided. We also provide dry bags for your belongings.
- non-cotton clothes
- shoes that can get wet
- an extra layer for warmth in case the weather changes
- bug spray
- a hat
- snacks and a lunch
- a water bottle
- a camera and binoculars would be good too! (Please remember that if these are not in the dry bag they can get wet.)
*Disclaimer: There is a learning curve and it may take a bit to get your rhythm. Guides are there to help, instruct, and support you! Canoes can tip over. It’s not a problem, as the river is small and shallow, so the shore is always nearby. Clothing and personal belongings can and do get wet. Please do not bring expensive items that you do not want to lose in the river.

Approximately 1.5 - 3 hours will be spent on the water with additional time spent viewing wildlife (see list below). Length of time depends on water levels.
