AWAKEN THE EXPLORER WITHIN and join us as we journey north of the Arctic Circle for what will truly be the adventure of a lifetime! Despite being the largest non-continental island, with an area larger than Mexico, Greenland is the least densely populated country on the planet, and although 81% of the land is covered in ice, the remaining land has supported the Inuit population for over 4,500 years. National Geographic even listed Greenland as one of the 20 best travel destinations for 2016!
After a day exploring Copenhagan, Denmark, the adventure begins as we fly into an old U.S. Air Force base, a relic of the Cold War, and now Greenland's international airport and then transfer for a short flight to the coastal town of Sisimiut. To start our adventure off right we'll leave Sisimiut by boat before transferring to a landing craft to begin the backpacking portion of our expedition. For four days and three nights we'll then cross the Arctic tundra as we follow the Polar Route to Sisimiut, and the West Coast of Greenland. Along the way you'll cross pristine streams, press on through scrub birch and willow thickets, pass through valleys brimming with the colors of the Arctic summer, and have countless opportunities to view Reindeer, Arctic Hare, and maybe even Musk Oxen, or an Arctic Fox(!) You'll feel immense pride as you walk into the beautiful coastal town of Sisimiut for a well deserved warm meal and a good night's sleep. Betties are expected to be able to hike most of the day while carrying approximately 30-35 pounds of weight in their packs over trails, tundra, marshes and some stream crossings.
Over several days in Sisimiut, an area that has been inhabited for at least 4,500 years, you'll have the opportunity to learn about Greenlandic culture and sample some native dishes. We'll check out the Sismiut Museum, meet local artisans at their workshop, and even have a get together with an extended family of Inuit hunters our guide has met along the trail.
This trip can easily be combined with a longer trip to Europe either before or after our journey. An estimated 300 people hike this route each year. How about checking Greenland and the Arctic off of your bucket list and make it 301?
